International airline activity

Fifty-one international scheduled airlines operated services to/from Australia during the month (includes five dedicated freight airlines but excludes airlines operating only via code share arrangements).


International scheduled passenger traffic in April 2009 was 1.978 million compared to 1.847 million in April 2008 – an increase of 7.1 per cent.

 
The increase in April 2009 comes after two consecutive months of decreased month on month traffic growth (-4.6 per cent in February 2009 and -4.7 per cent in March 2009).


The chart below compares monthly passenger traffic for the year ended April 2009 with monthly passenger traffic for the year ended April 2008. Passenger traffic for the year ended April 2009 was 23.463 million which is a 1.7 per cent increase over the year ended April 2008.


Total seats made available on international scheduled operations to/from Australia during April 2009 were 2.680 million – an increase of 5.7 per cent compared to April 2008. The overall seat utilisation percentage has increased from 73.9 per cent in April 2008 to 75.0 per cent in April 2009.
